Wheeling The Way To a Greener Future
We are all used to having two wheelie bins at home – one for general waste and one for recycling – so we have decided to implement the same concept at work to help improve our environmental performance. The new bins will allow us to easily recycle glass, paper, plastic, and cans – reducing the amount of waste we are sending to landfills each year. The bins will be placed around the shop floor and workshops, in addition to the ones currently located in the offices – another step towards reducing the carbon emissions linked to the industry.
In 2019, the UK government committed to the Net Zero Target as recommended by the Climate Change Committee, to help achieve the target by 2050. To help the UK industry reach the target, the government have put forward £171million to the Industrial Decarbonisation Fund to support businesses with their efforts. To help streamline progress, an interim target to reduce emissions by two-thirds has been set to be achieved by 2035. The main deadline is the 2050 target, which requires emissions to fall by 90% with the remaining offset using alternative methods. Steel is one of the world’s most widely used metals, but currently, the steelmaking process is one of the biggest global emitters of CO2 – despite being a 100% recyclable material. Since metal and glass can be repeatedly recycled without loss of quality, fine-tuning waste management processes will be a key movement to be made towards reaching the target.
Here at Adey Steel Ltd., we recognise the part we must play in reducing our carbon emissions and improving our performance in sustainable production. We have introduced sustainability and environmental performance as key metrics in all our future tenders and prequalification’s when we are bidding for work. This helps to ensure that all stages of the project process are working towards the government targets. We already work within several sectors contributing to the emission reduction, such as the introduction of more smart motorways, the addition of overhead line electrification on the rail network and improving all houses – old and new – to make them carbon neutral ready for the 2050 deadline. Our Business Improvement department is constantly looking for ways to improve our business processes, including working towards improving our environmental performance and waste management practices – all of which are important steps to a greener future in the steel industry.
