Adey Steel has manufactured, supplied and installed new deflector fans to help better circulate air within the A20 Roundhill tunnels in Kent.
The tunnels on the outskirts of Folkestone are composed of twin bores, each with a uni-directional two-lane carriageway, running for 370m. Each bore is ventilated to suport air pollution control.
However, this particular infrastructure project required specialist steel fabricators Adey Steel to install new deflector fans, which are tapered channels, inverted and inclined, to direct the air leaving the fans downwards. The main deflector frames were fabricated at Adey Steel's HQ in Loughborough from two frames compromised of SHS and RHS sections welded together.
The deflectors, which were made from structural grade mild steel, painted to prevent corrosion and provide intumescent fire protection, had to be fitted to the crown of the tunnel, some six metres above the carriageway, which meant some space constraints needed to be overcome. These were connected using bracket frames connected to the tunnel lining, which were fabricated from short lengths of plate, tee, angle and UC sections.
