Adey Steel has completed the design, fabrication, painting, and installation of a new super span signal gantry as part of the Bristol East Junction Redevelopment.
The infrastructure ugrade of the junction by Network Rail was needed to remove a bottleneck into Bristol Temple Meads to allow more trains to enter and exit the station, increase capacity, reduce congestion and ultimately help make train journeys more reliable.
The 34-metre super span railway signal gantry, which was manufactured at the company's headquarters in Loughborough, was made in three sections with two splice connections – all of which was completed to CE Marking EXC2 1090 with NDT Testing - prior to be transported to site. Each section was fitted by Adey Steel with cable trays, fall protection and GRP decking, instead of the traditional mesh decking, to reduce the potential for electrification as well as being lighter to install and longer lasting.
The structure was then assembled onsite by Adey Steel using an overhead crane and designated lay-down areas while rail-mounted bogies, MEWPS, scaffold towers and KIROW rail cranes were used during installation.
