Overview
Adey Steel was engaged by Alun Griffiths to design, manufacture, supply, and install key structural elements for the Access for All initiative at Fern Hill Station.
Scope
The project required the installation of 18 columns to support a 36-ramp structure, two stairwells, and the main span of the footbridge. This intricate structure, weighing over 200 tonnes of steel, featured cantilevered support arms for each ramp and incorporated 32 expansion joints to accommodate movement. Additionally, the ramps and stair sections included over 1.5 kilometres of handrail, further enhancing safety and accessibility for users.
The new footbridge and ramp system provide significant improvements to accessibility in Mountain Ash. These enhancements offer residents a safe and convenient way to cross railway tracks, connect to the local country park, and access the nearby hospital. The project also supports Transport for Wales’ (TfW) electrification and modernisation efforts along the Core Valley Line, contributing to improved infrastructure for the region.
Adey Steel’s teams conducted the work during strategically planned railway blockades:
- Initial Installation: During a four-night blockade, the columns were installed, laying the foundation for the main structure.
- Main Installation: A continuous seven-day line blockade enabled the successful assembly of the entire structure.
