Overview
Osprey commissioned Adey Steel to fabricate, test, and deliver six 5.0m-long, 50-tonne capacity transport beams for use in the HPC (Hinkley Point C) project.
Scope
Adey Steel Ltd. was responsible for delivering a complete fabrication package for the transport beams. This included the supply and processing of raw materials, which involved cutting, drilling, and mitring steel components to the required specifications. The beams were then fabricated and welded in accordance with BS EN 1090-2 EXC 2 standards, ensuring structural reliability and compliance with industry regulations.
A critical part of the process was the implementation of non-destructive testing (NDT) to validate weld integrity. Full penetration welds underwent 100% ultrasonic testing (UT), while fillet welds were inspected using 100% magnetic particle inspection (MPI). All testing was conducted by personnel certified to ISO 9712:2012 standards.
To meet durability and visual specifications, the beams were prepared and painted to client requirements. The main bodies were finished in RAL 5013 (Cobalt Blue), with the ends marked by a 500mm band of RAL 2004 (Pure Orange). The coating system included a red oxide or zinc silicate shop primer, followed by an anti-corrosive epoxy primer and a final epoxy topcoat. Where required, a non-slip aggregate was added to the final coat for additional safety.
Finally, Adey Steel managed the transportation and delivery of all six beams to the client’s site, ensuring that each unit met strict dimensional and quality standards prior to dispatch.
