Adey Steel has completed the installation of rail underbridges at Hayle in North Cornwall.
The family owned and operated steel fabrication specialist was commissioned by the customer to fabricate, paint and install two 50 tonne, 8.8 metre long underbridges for use on the Cornish Main Line at Bodriggy.
As part of the process, the team at Adey Steel conducted trial assembly of both bridge structures, walkways and bearings at the 100,000 square foot workshops in Loughborough to guarantee fit up on site. This was then followed by an EDM scan survey to check clearances and bearing levels.
The steel bridge units were then fully bolted before being transferred to the paint shop for grit blasting and the application of protective finishes. Once complete, the underbridges embarked on a 300 mile journey from the Midlands to the South West before being lifted into place by crane by Dyer & Butler - all within a 72 hour window.
Due to the nature of the contract, extensive controls were put into place to minimise risk including:
- Exclusion Zones
- HAVs (Hand Arm Vibration)
- Fuel Spillages
- Slips, Trips and Falls
- Working around Crane Movements
