Adey Steel has manufactured, supplied and installed overhead gantries on the M1 as part of the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) scheme.
Several years ago, the Government committed substantial funding to the National Emergency Area Retrofit (NEAR) scheme to address drivers’ concerns regarding finding a safe place to stop in the event of an emergency on smart motorways.
As a member of the National Highways Sector Scheme (NHSS), Adey Steel was invited by the SMP Alliance to support the programme to create a dozen additional emergency areas on the M1 between junctions 32 and 35A.
A dedicated team based at the company’s headquarters in Loughborough have fabricated overhead gantries to help provide road users with more information about the emergency areas available between Thurcroft and Stocksbridge in South Yorkshire.
