Transformation of Chippenham Station
Adey Steel has helped boost accessibility for all at Chippenham Station with the manufacture, supply and install of a new lift shaft on the north side of the Wiltshire station.
The lift shaft together with linkspan steelwork, cladding, double glazed windows and amendments to existing bridge support trestles forms part of a £1m scheme to provide step-free access to platforms from both sides of the railway.
The scheme also involved turning the staircase on the northern side of the footbridge, which also acts as a public right of way. As part of the six-month long project, new disabled car parking spaces and more cycle parking facilities were installed.
A delighted Michelle Donelan, MP for Chippenham, said: “The completion of this accessibility scheme at Chippenham station is fantastic news for residents and visitors alike, meaning all members of our community, including those with mobility challenges, can easily access the station and enjoy the convenience of step-free access.”
Chippenham is among a number of high profile rail projects undertaken by Adey Steel in the last few years. It has also installed a new rail footbridge at Oakengates in Shropshire as well as supplied over 4,000 tonnes of fabricated steel for the Midland Mainline Corby to London route. Most recently it manufactured, supplied and installed rail underbridges at Hayle in North Cornwall.
